Biography:
Prof. Rui M. S. Almeida is Portuguese, born in Mozambique, and started medical school in Lisbon (Portugal). Received medical degree from the Parana Federal University - Brazil, in 1980. The cardiovascular surgical training was performed at Curitiba ́s Evangelical Hospital, until 1984 and after at The Hospital for Sick Children, in London, under the supervision of Mr. Jaroslav Stark and Marc R. De Leval, as a Senior House Officer. T the National Heart Hospital under the supervision of Mr. Donald N. Ross and Prof. Magdi H. Yacoub, as a Registrar. Senior research Registrar at the Institute of Child Health. After this surgical training returned to Curitiba and joined the cardiovascular surgical team at Curitiba ́s Evangelical Hospital and became a medical professor at the Parana ́s Evangelical Medical School..
Degree: M.Sc. in cardiac surgery in 1993, with an experimental work– Creation of an experimental model, in dogs, to study aortic valve homografts, Ph.D. in 2000 with a thesis– Clinical application of a bileaflet mechanical, rotational, heart valve in aortic position and Post-Doctoral in Correction of left ventricular aneurysms by Dor’s technique.
Career: In 1993 become the chief cardiovascular surgeon at Western Parana Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery, and performed, until now, more than 10000 cardiovascular procedures, as a surgeon or first assistant. First Dean of Western Parana State University Medical School, between 1995 and 2000. As a University Professor has had a great number of position in academic boards (administrative, educational and research). Appointed first Full Professor of Western Parana State University Medical School. In 2005 became responsible for a new private medical school, at the Assis Gurgacz University Center, which started its academic activities in 2008, and become Dean, until nowadays. This Medical School is ranked as one of the top mark in Brazil.
Association: President of the South Brazilian’ Society of Cardiovascular Surgery (2007-09), In the Brazilian’ Society of Cardiovascular Surgery was member of the Board (2009-10), President of the Board (2011-13), President of the Endovascular Department (2011-13), Scientific Director (2014-15), Vice-President (2015-17) and President (2018-19), Education Director (2020-2025). Actually, President-Elected of the Latinamerican Association of Cardiac and Endovascular Surgeons (LACES)
Publication: Published more than 100 papers in peer reviewed national and international, medical journals and presented more than 250 papers in scientific meetings. Was invited to lecture at specialized meetings more than 100 times, in Brazil, Argentina, Canada, China, Croatia, France, Mexico, Portugal, Slovenia, Sweden, United Kingdom and United States of America. He is also part of the editorial board of ten international journals and five Brazilian.
